Project: Collaborative Success: Limina Studios and Royal Commission for AlUla Unveil Immersive Virtual Tour

Overview
Limina Studios partnered with the Royal Commission for AlUla to create an immersive AlUla virtual tour that allows global audiences to explore one of Saudi Arabia’s most important heritage destinations remotely. The experience was unveiled at Arabian Travel Market 2023, where visitors explored AlUla’s historic landscapes using virtual reality technology.

The Challenge
AlUla’s heritage sites are vast, detailed, and deeply atmospheric. Communicating their cultural value and physical scale through traditional photos or videos alone was not enough. The challenge was to present AlUla in a way that felt authentic, immersive, and emotionally engaging, while remaining accessible to international tourism audiences who could not visit in person.

The Approach
Limina Studios worked closely with the Royal Commission for AlUla to combine accurate digital documentation with immersive storytelling. The project focused on capturing real environments with precision while designing an experience that was easy to navigate, intuitive for first-time users, and impactful in a live exhibition setting.

The Solution
Using advanced 3D scanning and photogrammetry, Limina Studios digitally captured AlUla’s most iconic locations, including AlUla Old Town, Hegra, and Elephant Rock. These environments were transformed into an interactive virtual tour and digital twin, allowing users to move freely between locations, explore details up close, and understand the scale and history of each site. At Arabian Travel Market, the experience was delivered through VR headsets, with live guidance from the Limina Studios team.

The Results
The AlUla virtual tour achieved high visitor engagement, attracting strong interest at Arabian Travel Market, with visitors spending extended time inside the experience. Attendees provided positive feedback, highlighting the realism, clarity, and emotional impact of the virtual tour, describing it as both inspiring and informative. The experience also proved effective in promoting tourism, increasing awareness of AlUla as a cultural destination, encouraging future travel, and supporting heritage preservation efforts.
